Teen Therapy in Huntington, NY
Helping Teens Feel More Like Themselves
Being a teenager can be complicated.
Between school, friendships, family, social pressure, and figuring out who you are, there can be a lot to navigate.
Maybe your teen seems more withdrawn, anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, or simply not quite like themselves lately.
Caren Jacobs, LCSW works with teens via telehealth throughout New York State, creating a space where they can feel heard, understood, and genuinely themselves.
When Your Teen Doesn't Seem Like Themselves
Sometimes the changes are obvious.
Other times, they are harder to put your finger on.
Your teen may be struggling with anxiety, sadness, low self-esteem, school stress, friendships, family conflict, or simply feeling like they don’t fit in.
You may notice that they are:
- Spending more time alone
- Becoming more irritable or emotional
- Losing interest in things they used to enjoy
- Struggling at school
- Having difficulty with friendships or relationships
- Worrying constantly
- Being harder on themselves
- Having trouble expressing what they are feeling
And sometimes, they may not even know how to explain what is going on.
Being a Teen Is Hard Enough Without Feeling Alone
Teenagers are navigating a lot while still trying to figure out who they are.
They are dealing with friendships, school, family expectations, social media, changing relationships, and the pressure to fit in, all while becoming more independent.
Sometimes they need a place where they can talk openly without worrying about disappointing their parents or being told what they should be doing.
Therapy can give them that space.
Sometimes Teens Need Someone Who Isn't Mom or Dad
As a parent, you want to help. But there are some things your teen may not feel comfortable telling you.
That’s okay.
Having another trusted adult to talk to can give them the freedom to say what they really think and feel without worrying about how you’ll react.
My role isn’t to take sides or tell your teen what they should do.
It’s to listen, ask questions, challenge them when needed, and help them work through what is happening in their world.
What About Parents?
Parents are an important part of a teen's support system, and I believe communication matters.
At the same time, teens need to know that therapy is a space where they can speak openly.
We’ll talk about how parents can be appropriately involved while also giving your teen the privacy and independence they need to build trust in the therapeutic relationship.
The goal is to support your teen without making them feel like therapy is another place where they are being watched or judged.
My Approach to Working with Teens
Therapy with teens should feel like a conversation, not a lecture.
I take a creative, eclectic, and evidence – based approach and adapt our work to the individual teen sitting in front of me. Sometimes that means talking things through. Sometimes it means, looking at thought patterns, relationships, past experiences, or coping strategies. And sometimes a little creativity can help a teen express something that they aren’t quite ready to put into words.
There isn’t one way to do therapy.
We’ll figure out what works together.
Your Teen Doesn't Have to Figure It All Out Alone
Your teen may be struggling right now, but this moment doesn’t define who they are or who they will become.
Sometimes having the right person to talk to can make all the difference.
Therapy can help your teen feel more confident, understand what they are experiencing, and reconnect with the parts of themselves that may have gotten lost along the way.
Creating a Space Where Teens Can Be Themselves
One of the most important parts of teen therapy is creating a relationship built on trust.
Your teen doesn’t have to come into therapy with everything figured out.
They don’t have to know exactly what they want to talk about.
They can show up as they are.
My goal is to create a space where they can be honest, ask questions, explore difficult feelings, and gradually become more comfortable being themselves.
FAO's for Teen Therapy:
Teen therapy can help adolescents work through concerns such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, school stress, friendship and relationship difficulties, family conflict, social anxiety, difficult life experiences, and feeling disconnected from themselves.
Teen therapy does not require a teenager to arrive knowing exactly what to say. Building trust is an important part of the process.
Therapy can provide a space where teens can talk at their own pace, explore what they are experiencing, and find ways to express things confidentially that may be difficult for them to discuss at home.
Online teen therapy allows adolescents to meet through secure telehealth sessions from a private setting.
Caren Jacobs, LSW provides teen therapy throughout New York State, so families do not need to be located in Huntington to work with her.
